Dark Themes

The dark themes of the series would be seen when either a character appears to be lonely, during plot twists, or when chaotic scenes take place. Such as Lauren walking the streets of Philadelphia and London, finding out Helen's secret, or Amanda trying to kill Lauren. The overall tone to dark scenes would consist of a large amount of shadows, subtle lighting and moody colouring.

Light Themes

The light themes of the series would be seen when the characters have a sense of hope, comfortability, or are carrying out a routine. Such as Helen and Lauren's morning breakfast, Lauren arriving in London, or when meeting back up with Ethan in their café. These scenes would consist of natural lighting, subtle shadows, and bright colour tones.

'House of Cards' Example

'Doctor Foster' Example

Retro Themes

The retro themes of the series would be seen at the beginning of the story in order to clearly portray the 1980s era that the scenes are based in. These include visuals of a young Helen, pregnant with Kathleen and Frank's baby, and Helen secretly running away with the unborn child, all set in London 1989. The overall content of retro themed scenes would consist of vintage clothing and settings.

'Ghost' Example

'Sherlock' Example

The upscale themes of the series would be seen through posh and suburban locations and surroundings. Including Lauren and Ethan travelling through the streets of London, drinking in a modern bar, staying in an expensive hotel, and Lauren visiting her birth parents' pristine townhouse. The overall appearance of upscale themed scenes would consist of modern and rich settings and people.

Upscale Themes

'Creed' Example

The urban themes of the series would be seen through shabby and downscale settings and locations. Such as Lauren travelling through the streets of Southwest Philadelphia, on her way to Philadelphia airport, or in the less upscale streets of London. The overall visuals of urban scenes would consist of tall, outdated city buildings and slightly dismal surroundings.

Urban Themes

'Mr. Robot' Example

The modern themes of the series would be seen throughout the rest of the story, which would be clearly shown through the use of modern settings, clothing, transport and props. Seen most commonly in upscale areas of London, such as Frank's cold, modern office building, but also through uses of modern technology such as Ethan using a smart phone.
